Classroom News Sept 16 - 20

Good afternoon!
Great week here at school. Our weekly Town Hall meetings been even more successful than anticipated, with students delving into topics that the average 6th, 7th, 8th grader might not approach! This week students brought up some concerns they had about access to age-appropriate resources/equipment during their break time, which morphed into a really powerful discussion about gender-equality issues. By the end of the meeting 25 different students had come up and spoke (over the microphone!) to 72 of their peers with concerns, suggestions, and perceptions. The students should be commended for their maturity in handling this discussion--they addressed deeply felt concerns, while not laying specific blame or intent, and all were respectful and receptive listeners to their peers, so cool! Many students have decided to continue this dialogue in the form of a "recess committee" group, led by students, that will bring forth concerns, propose solutions, and ultimately take action. I strongly encourage you to engage your student in discussion about their experience at this week's Town Hall, they should be extremely proud of their actions as problem-solvers and young citizens!
Big thank you to Ms. Meredith for organizing our Ropes Course Field Trip today. The students were put in safe, yet challenging, situations where they relied on each other for support and problem solving. Definitely witnessed some powerful moments of camaraderie and students building confidence by stepping out of their comfort zone.
