8th Winter Break Wrap Up HW (Social Studies)

Hi 8th Graders,

Here are several links to help you finish your Revolutionary War Essay. Remember, you have notes on all of these readings. I've included the notes organizers/assignments as attachments in case you need another/misplaced yours/need a refresher. Please share your finished essay with me via Google Drive/Docs.

This essay is now due Monday, January 9th. I encourage you to finish the essay sooner than later--perhaps this weekend! But, I want to give the opportunity for you to check in with me in person; that is why it will now be due one week after we return. However, there will be no more classtime given to this assignment.

The short version of the essay assignment is: a 1-2 page essay on the causes of the Revolutionary War. You can also add your thoughts on whether rebellion was unavoidable or could have been prevented. Everything you need to do this is your notes on the several readings we did. Also, think about the "break up letter" (aka Declaration of Independence) activity we did. The key is that you show me you understand multiple factors that, when combined, led to the American Revolution.

ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION

"Toward Independence" Reading:

Toward Independence--Intro
Section 2: Before 1763
Section 3: Early British Actions in the Colonies
Section 4: Townshend Acts
Section 5: The Boston Massacre
Section 6: The Boston Tea Party
Section 7: The Intolerable Acts
Section 8: Lexington and Concord
Note Organizer for "Toward Independence" Reading

Pamphlet Assignment
(this also went with the Toward Independence reading--you wrote from your, or your character from our role-play, perspective on whether the events we learned about would be enough for you to want to rebel against England. This is great pre-writing for the essay assignment).

Lastly, please feel free to email me with any questions that come up.
Thanks!
-Mr. Radich

Reading Passport Program: A Message from Ms. Shanna

Greetings from the Library!!

Your student will soon receive their new SIA Reading Passport!! It is their ticket to exploring novel ideas, meeting new people, discovering other cultures, and losing themselves in magical lands!

Filling up the Passport is easy! Just select books- from the SIA library, your local public library, books you own or borrow- that meet the requirements for each category. Finish the book, jot down the title and a couple of thoughts about the book and you’ll earn the stamp for that category. Passports are "leveled" to accommodate emerging readers. Students may have books read to them either in school or at home! Audiobooks count too! Books must be read or listened to during the Passport challenge period (from when they receive their passport until May), books read in the past do not count. If you have questions about whether or not a book meets the challenge requirements, feel free to ask!

Students who collect the most stamps will earn the title of “Worldly Reader,” be featured on the Passport bulletin board, and receive a prize. You have until May to complete the challenges. There will be additional prizes for students who suggest and present "book talks" or "shelf talkers" and/or create and complete their own categories.

The Passports will live in the library. Students will be able to update their Passports and stamps will be issued during their weekly library time or during lunch recess on Thursdays.

If you have questions, would like to participate, or would like a list of the challenges, please feel free to drop by or email me at sschlitz@sauvieislandacademy.org

8th Grade Math HW

Hi 8th Graders,

For tonight, I want you to tackle the cupcake problem from class. Draw pictures, use formulas, think intuitively. There are a few ways you could get to the answer, so as long as you show your work you'll be okay!

HINT: We are focusing on multi-step equations currently, so if you get stuck, think about how to set up an equation.

Thanks,
Mr. Radich

Kelsey made cupcakes to sell as a fundraiser for her trip to Washington DC. She purchased one cupcake pan for $12. She calculated that the ingredients cost her $0.25 per cupcake. She plans to sell the cupcakes for $0.75 each.

a. Write an equation that could be used to find the number of cupcakes (x) she will need to sell to break even.

 b. Solve the equation from part a. Explain how you know your answer is correct. c. If she sold 184 cupcakes, what was her profit?
