Upper Grades Update

Good afternoon upper grades families!

We hope you enjoyed a few days off to rest and perhaps build some snowmen. Here are a few changes and updates for the rest of this week:

  • Due to a few days away from school we have decided to cancel field studies tomorrow in order to have more time in the classroom. We will be having a normal school day schedule.
  • After school tomorrow we have our first dance from 3:15-5:15. Please make sure to arrange transportation at 5:15 as there will be no buses at this time.
  • Tribal Cultural Heritage Night is on Thursday at 6:30pm. This event will feature tribal drumming and singing, as well as traditional foods and cultural demonstrations stations for youth, adults, and families. Stations are slated to include: traditional paint making with minerals, cordage making (with cattail, dogbane, cedar), chinuk wawa language basics, necklace making, and tribal history. We hope to see you there!

Please let students know about these changes as it will help our school day and rest of the week run smoothly. As always, thank you for your support in and out of the classroom.

-Brittany, Matt, and Aly

Social Studies Reminders

Hello all,

Hope you're staying safe and warm!

Just wanted to send a quick few suggestions/reminders for Social Students who may be wondering what they can be doing with their extra time-off.

All Social Studies (6th, 7th, 8th) have a current event log due this Friday. The form for the current event log can be found here at the blog. Students can complete their write-up on a separate sheet of paper or may type it.

If students are looking for a good article to choose for this week's current event, I'd recommend one of the following articles about Nelson Mandela:
The previous two articles are at our middle grades reading level; for students who would like a challenge and/or are more curious about Nelson Mandela, the following New York Times site has a great collection of stories past and present about Nelson Mandela: http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/m/nelson_mandela/

6th Grade Only -- South America Map Test Next Wednesday

6th graders have their South American Map Test in just over a week. Here are two great study resources:

Lastly, with this extra time off I strongly encourage students to spend a significant amount of time each day reading a book of their choice.

Stay warm and hopefully we'll be back in session tomorrow!

Guest Author & Writer's Workshop

This week SIA was fortunate to have author Rosanne Parry here for two full days of seminars and workshops for all grade levels. The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders each had two 1-hour sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, it was great to see students engaging with a successful and published author. For information on Rosanne Parry, whose books have been featured for multiple years on Oregon Battle of the Books, please visit her website: http://rosanneparry.com/. Rosanne will be hosting a Family Write Night this Thursday at 6pm here at school, it'd be great to see you there!

Oregon Food Bank Field Trip

On Thursday 7th and 8th graders will go on our annual trip to the Oregon Food Bank. This trip is always a student favorite and a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community through service-learning!

New Enrichment Classes!

With the beginning of the new quarter all students have rotated their enrichment classes. The new course offerings are as follows:

Mark Your Calendars: Tribal Heritage Night

Math Volunteers Needed

Calling all available parents! We could really use additional math helpers in the upper grades every Tuesday through Friday from 8:40 to 9:35. All levels need assistance, no math expertise needed, please email Aly, Brittany, or I if available.

Field Study

All Field Study groups will meet the next two Wednesdays. All three projects will meet in the morning to better accommodate a cohesive schedule. Please ensure students are appropriately dressed, the weather will be extremely cold.

Upper Grades Dance

The first dance of the year is upon us and the students couldn't be more excited. The dance is here at school next Wednesday, December 11th from 3:15 to 5:15 PM.

Have a fantastic rest of the week and pleasant weekend!

Best,
Mr. Radich
