Hello all!
It's been a busy spring here in Social Studies! Here's just a little bit of what we've been up to and how we'll be finishing out the year:
6th Grade:
We wrapped up our studies of ancient civilizations for the year with some projects around Roman legacies and reasons for the fall of Rome. Students wrote ode style poems to an achievement of the Roman Empire, many of which are contributions we still use today! We finished the unit with students choosing between a Fall of Rome Spectrum or Political Cartoon project. In the Spectrum project, students used our list of 10 Theories for the Fall of Rome to support the most important (or least important) contributors to Rome's fall. For the Political Cartoon option, students used our knowledge of characteristics of political cartoons to integrate three theories of the fall of Rome into their cartoon.
We're wrapping up the year with a storyline unit where students take on roles as part of a newspaper team in a town called Newsville. This unit integrates many skills from this year and cross-curricular content as we create a class newspaper, fun stuff!
7th Grade:
7th Grade has been honing in on excellent reading, responding, and note-taking skills that will set us up for success next year when the academic load (especially independent work) increases. We've been learning about Medieval Times, Feudalism and its decline, and are now heading in the Renaissance. Students will finish the year with a research project on a Renaissance thinker and become part of a living museum.
8th Grade:
We wrapped up our World War 1 unit that gave a brief survey of the war including it's causes, series of events, geography, technology and trench warfare, and the war's conclusion with the Treaty of Versailles and its implications. We're now in the midst of an Economics unit where students are learning basics of micro and macro economics with some fun simulations mixed in.
It's been such a great year, looking forward to finishing strong!
